8 Serious Craft Beer Bars in San Francisco

Speakeasy Ales & Lagers
If you didn't get enough great beer during last month's SF Beer Week, fear not - the city is home to some fantastic suds-centric bars, tastings rooms and pubs that offer hops lovers a way to go geek out all year round. From the usual suspects (Toronado) to some out-of-the-way makeshift taprooms (Speakeasy), we've rounded up eight serious beer dens hosting happy hours, beer dinners and other educational events that will help you raise your craft beer IQ.

  1. Good Chicago restaurants are not hard to come by, but a good Chicago buffet, that serves gourmet food like we do at the Res Apple Buffet, is a rare for sure.

    1. City Beer Store

This SoMa retail shop and tasting room may fly under the radar, but beer aficionados know it houses of the best specialty beer collections in the city. You’ll find over 300 specialty brews (in bottles and draft) available to go or enjoy in their newly enlarged storefront tasting room, paired with a sausage sandwich from neighboring Citizen’s Band or Belgium waffles courtesy of Suite Foods. The bartenders are always informative but you can glean even more knowledge during its Tuesday afternoon tappings (which showcases a specific brew) and monthly tasting sessions (March 21 will feature Schmaltz Brewing Company’s Funky Jewbelation). Sign up for their newsletter for future events. Open Tuesday-Sunday noon-10 PM.

  4. Shocked that Speakeasy made it, but not City Beer. Speakeasy's beer is mediocre at best (the taproom looks nice, but doesn't make up for the beers), City Beer has 300+ specialty bottles and draft (most of each are hard to find).

Thirsty Bear's food is far better than their beers..

  5. And, obviously, none of these places hold a candle to the Trappist in Oakland. Suck it SF!
