SF Weekend Planner: Parties, Pudding, Soul Food, and More

Friday Night Food Trucks
If you don’t work near a midday food truck scene, join the alfresco party at one of the Friday evening powwows happening on both sides of the bridge. Off the Grid hosts an evening market at Lake Merritt at the Oakland Museum of California (5-9PM), the Bluxome Street Winery rolls out its second Drive-In Series with Kasa Indian (5-8 PM) and SoMa StrEat Food Park is doing its regular thing all weekend long. FYI Anyone interested in joining a Berlin-style ping-pong league that will play on Monday evenings at SoMa StrEat Park, teams are forming this week (get deets here).

The Proof is in the Pudding
It all sounds rather filling but that should stop the crowds from descending on Omnivore Books this Saturday afternoon for an AYCE-pudding contest.  Butterscotch, blood, corn: trot your grandma’s treasure recipe or create your own 21st century version, or just come to gawk and sample the entrees. Entrants should bring their own bowl and serving spoon and earn the right to cast their vote on competition; bystanders can shell out $5 and try spoonfuls of all. The winner wins half of the door money (Saturday 3-4 PM, Ominivore Books, 3885a Cesar Chavez St, 415-282-4712).

Mo’ Soul Food
If you missed last week’s SF Noir eat fest, take heed. This weekend, vendors in the Bayview will be turning out soul food favs such as BBQ chicken, ribs, jambalaya and much more at the free, all-day annual Black Cuisine Festival. In addition to food, they’ll be two stages hosting live music and spoken word, a kid-activity area and a cook-off (Saturday, 11AM- 7PM, free; 1705 Yosemite St; get the complete line-up of activities online).

Solstice Lounge Bids Farewell
The liveliest party going down this weekend is definitely go to be at Solstice, the Pac Heights stalwart that will be closes its doors after one big ole party on Saturday night. Bartenders past and present will be mixing the lounge’s signature raspberry mojitos, the kitchen will be whipping up its highly caloric gorgonzola mac ‘ n cheese and regulars will convene to give the local watering hole a send-off to remember (Saturday, 5PM ‘til closing, 2801 California St; 415-359-1222).
