Photo of the Day: Paul Kahan and His Danish Teak Peppermill Collection

Ever wonder what to get the chef who has everything (including six of the best restaurants/bars in town)? Last week, as our Priceless Chicago dinner wound to a close at Publican Quality Meats, chef Paul Kahan put something strange on the table: Two teak peppermills. Apparently, they are part of a much larger collection of Danish grinders that Kahan adores.

First popping up in the late 1950s, the mills have a distinctly non-Danish design - non-minimalistic, elegantly carved wood. The mills retail from $30 to several hundred, depending on the intricacy of the carving, the condition, age and functionality. There is an entire book dedicated to them titled, “Danish Pepper” by Mark Perlson. Who knew? But next time we have trouble getting a reservation at Blackbird, maybe we just slip one of these in front of the chef.
