preview a few weeks ago, looks like everything finally came together for the new Mid-City barbecue joint, Bludso's Bar & Que, to debut yesterday. The name subtly conveys the fact that this isn't just any bbq restaurant, but one that serves cocktails (really, really good cocktails) to boot. The food comes courtesy Noah Galuten via Kevin Bludso, the man whose smoked brisket and ribs are the stuff of legend in Compton. Galuten, a food-writer-turned-pro-cook, has been working with owners Jason Bernstein and James Starr at their other venture, The Golden State, for a couple of years. And somehow that blue-eyed boy from Santa Monica really knows his Texas-style 'cue. The fact that this collab pairs the people behind the Best Burger and Best BBQ in LA, according to the 2013 Zagat restaurant guide, is not lost on us.
You wouldn't recognize the space as the former Tar Pit. Not only are there big windows and a patio out front, but it's wide open inside with a nice long bar for sipping mint juleps and Fernet on tap, or great beers like Cismonte Holy Jim Falls XPA, and sure, PBR. It's mostly picnic tables around the room, and lots of TVs (thus, the football watching a few weeks ago). On the menu, the meats are priced per pound all served on metal trays lined with paper; or get a sampler for the full spectrum. This is down-and-dirty eating; you won't need a plate. Sides like meaty baked beans, excellent mac and cheese, collard greens and cornbread round things out. Bludso's Bar & Que is open nightly at 5 PM with lunch and take-out to come soon.
