Open Call: What Are the Most Overrated Dishes in Austin?

In the past few years we’ve highlighted the most overrated, overhyped dishes in New York (Magnolia Bakery cupcakes, anyone?). Now it’s Austin’s turn. Is there a dish you love to hate here? A presentation that gets too much credit? What dishes would you say are the most overrated?

Tell us what you think in the comments section below, and look out for your quotes in a more comprehensive story coming soon.

  1. Home Slice pizza. It's good, but it's not *that* good.

  2. Mighty Cone's chicken cones. It's basically a flour tortilla wrapped around a chicken tender. What's so great about that?

      Nothing.

    1. Gotta disagree with the stuffed avocado. I genuinely find it delicious.

    2. Agree, the stuffed avocados are phenomenal! I wish they weren't so pricey though.

  4. I think it's funny that Hey Cupcake is pictured, because I find their cupcakes to be a fitting choice here. When I tried them, they were really dry and not very flavorful and the icing was forgettable. I really prefer Quacks or Sugar Mama's.

  5. TacoDeli and Torchy's Tacos. So may better tacos to be had around town.

    1. I would disagree. They are pretty good IMO and haven't come across anyone who thought otherwise. They sure are not the best but I haven't hear anyone saying that either.

Torchy's is probably the best tex-mex I have had, although tex-mex isn't my thing. If you think there is a better tex-mex place, please share.

    2. If your opinion of Tex-Mex is based on Torchy's, that certainly explains why "tex-mex isn't my thing". They're good, but maybe not great.

"If you think there is a better tex-mex place, please share". Ok, try Amaya's Taco Village for excellent Tex-Mex. Get the carne guisada and add a village taco on the side. Go downscale with the enchiladas at Dart Bowl, or more upscale with enchiladas at Eastside Cafe. Crawfish Tamales at Quality Seafood are only available in season but try them when they've got them.

    1. I agree. Particularly about the waffle. Always chewy, never malty. Not a very good waffle.

  7. Mother's. I keep going thinking that I like it, and then I get there and it's bland as hell. There's so many other new and exciting veggie options in Austin - Mother's has been running on reputation for far too long.

  8. Guerro's is SUPER overrated. All I hear about is how they're an absolute must for visiting tourists. In reality their food is bland and nauseating with the absolute worst margaritas in Austin. Blech.

    1. Fuck hopdoddy. Burgers are not worth 45 min wait and the staff are stupid assholes.

  10. The Oasis. Overpriced, uncreative food. You can get anything on their menu at other places and it will probably taste better, too.

    1. Exactly! Great view ruined by sub par food.

  11. I have always been underwhelmed at most everything I have ever ordered from Magnolia Cafe. The pancakes are the only things that I like. The omelets are bland and dry. Any extras that are folded into the eggs are tasteless and boring.
Curra's has been a place that I always want to enjoy but never have been able. The food is a bland watered down version of Tex Mex. I have frequently been on the receiving end of really rude service or none at all (having to go to the bar for water refills). Quesadillas were greasy. Shrimp tacos were far too fishy for my son and that is saying a lot.
I am in agreeance with the other who have chimed in on Hey Cupcake. I thought I was just being picky because I like to bake. We sampled the red velvet, carrot cake and a chocolate cake that was cream filled. The icing just tasted like whipped vegetable oil and sugar. It didn't have a homemade taste at all. The cakes themselves were dry and unimpressive.
