Octavio Becerra Resurfaces at Circa in Manhattan Beach

We're still kind of sad by the shutter of Palate Food & Wine in Glendale, which chef Octavio Becerra opened in 2008. It unexpectedly closed last March, a victim of the recession or fickle diners or worse. But Becerra, who helped put Patina on the map eons ago, has teamed up with Mike Zislis to open Circa in the former Mucho Ultima spot in Manhattan Beach. Zislis, who owned the previous restaurant, had the place redesigned with a "steampunk vintage industrial" look, about 150 seats, and a large bar where Julian Cox and Josh Goldman-designed cocktails will be served.

Becerra serves as the consulting chef, and his menu is a mish-mash of globally inspired small plates, things like scallop and oro blanco ceviche, Spanish-style sardines served in a can, and bone marrow with kimchi and quail eggs. The restaurant, which soft opens tonight, is taking limited reservations now, and will go full-force on Feb. 19.
