New Cocktails at Franklin Mortgage, Pod and Emmanuelle

Even though Punxsutawney Phil didn't see his shadow, we still have a few more weeks of winter to get through. Cocktails are a great way to turn a cold night into a hot party, and new drink menus have rolled out at three of the city’s better bars.

The Franklin Mortgage and Investment Co. revamps the drink list every season, and this week rolled out its 14th version. Eight classics and 20 brand new creations are divided into the speakeasy’s standard categories - Required Reading, Rebellious Spirits and I Asked Her for Water, She Brought Me Gasoline (standard only for this bar, we must clarify). A highlight is the Boss Lady, a riff on the Old Fashioned with Old Grandad 114, cognac and coffee liqueur. Stop into the below-ground Rittenhouse lounge to give it a try, the menu will be around only for the next three months (267-467-3277).

In University City, Stephen Starr’s Pod rolled out new versions of the half dozen “Color Cocktails” on the bar menu. These drinks are as luminescent as the glowing orbs decorating the swooping white dining room, and are relatively sweet and easy to drink. For example, Indigo will bring a blueish sip of sake, vodka, blackberry purée and lime juice to your lips, while Red includes shochu, white wine, Campari and grenadine. Pair them with the spicy tuna crispy rice appetizer and you’re in for a treat (215-387-1803).

Drinks author Katie Loeb designed the original menu for Emmanuelle, launched late last year behind the Piazza in Northern Liberties, but now she’s gone and a new winter menu is taking its place. Phoebe Esmon and Christian Gaal are running the bar, and their new menu includes drinks in categories dubbed “Hot,” “Shaken,” “Stirred” and “Punch.” you can also opt for bespoke cocktails, crafted on the spot to your personal taste. Bar snacks like nuts and pickles are now also available at the bar (267-639-2470).
