Mid-City Sweets: Carmela Ice Cream, Cookie Casa Now Open


Sweet tooths, beware. There are two new spots to get your sugar fix around Mid-City. The farmers market favorite Carmela Ice Cream opened on West Third Street, scooping those fantastic flavors like lavender honey, salted caramel, meyer lemon-olive oil and strawberry buttermilk (the stuff that dreams are made of). This is the second outpost for Jessica Mortarotti and co., the first being in Pasadena, which remains open and continues ice cream making classes. You can still find the Carmela truck parked at various farmers markets, too. Fact: If you're having a bad day, one of the ice cream sandwiches (pre-made or customized) will make it all better (7920 W. Third St.; 323-944-0232).

Erin Zabel has finally opened a Cookie Casa storefront next to House Cafe on Beverly Boulevard. You may have seen her home-spun desserts delivered (the only way you could before) or on coffee bar counters and cafe dessert cases, but she finally has a home for her chocolate chip cookies, whoopie pies, decadent cupcakes and "crack," chocolate fudge bark bars filled with various flavors like mint and more choclate. The bakery is open Monday through Saturday from 8 AM - 6 PM (8116 Beverly Blvd.; 310-922-6396).
