The menu, created with the help of Schlow’s longtime corporate chef, Luis Morales (a Costa Rica native), is designed with five sections: shared appetizers, street tacos, quesadillas, fajitas and entrees. The items run the gambit from guacamole and tuna ceviche tostados to Mexican-spiced fried chicken with chipotle fries.
The interior has been overhauled with honey-hued and gold-flecked paint and vintage Mexican film posters from the 1950s and 1960s plastered on the back wall, thanks to a redesign by Schlow’s wife, Adrienne. Velvet curtains create an intimate dining space; there’s a lounge with sofas and a private dining area - all accented with Mexican blankets on the walls, large white candles and hurricane lamps.
A hand-painted Mexican-tiled chalkboard features Barrio’s cocktails and a select tequilas; the list comprises of upwards of 80 tequilas and 15 different margaritas. The 13 or so beers on draft hail locally as well as from Mexico and the Caribbean.
Schlow also owns and operates Tico, another Latin/Mexican-style resto, Radius, Via Matta and Alta Strada.
Barrio Cantina will serve dinner nightly starting at 5 PM. Lunch and weekend brunch will start in the coming months. An outdoor patio will open with the warmer weather.
