DC Bars Where You Can Meet a Hipster

ChurchKey
DC isn't just the home of politicians - there are hipsters in the mix as well. And if you're looking for a night filled with quirky decor and plenty of beer, then these hipster bars are calling your name. Don't forget to throw on your ironic nerd glasses.

“Grab a drink”, “see a show” and “bring quarters for the pinball machine” and jukebox when you hit this “iconic” 14th Streeter where there’s “always something going on” – from “great bands” and dance parties to “cool theme nights” and poetry readings; the “wonderful” bartenders pour “relatively cheap” drinks in the “funky” two-level space to a crowd so “indie” an “ironic mustache” could be part of the dress code.

A “veritable cornucopia” of “continually changing”, “unusual” brews fuels this “epicenter of Logan Circle cool” (perched above Birch & Barley restaurant), where the “vibrant scene” and “classy dark decor”, plus staffers who “know their stuff”, draw “hipsters, frat kids, date nights and beer snobs”; just “wear” “comfortable shoes”, because the “narrow setup” can get “cramped” and “scoring a table is like winning the lottery.”

Little Miss Whiskey's Golden Dollar
Appeal: 25
Decor: 23

“Look for the purple light and the fleur-de-lis flag” to find this Atlas District “watering hole”–meets–“hip” lounge “hidden away” on H Street where retro neon signs, gilded vintage lights and “interesting people” create a “cool vibe”; an “impressive” beer selection, unusual cocktails and a hopping upstairs dance floor add up to a sometimes “crazy”, “anything-goes” atmosphere (especially on Kostume Karaoke nights), but whiskey mavens agree, it’s “a delight”; P.S. it’s cash-only.

Quarry House Tavern

An “excellent” beer selection and “fantastic” whiskey menu poured by “friendly” bartenders elevate this longtime “basement dive” in Downtown Silver Spring into a “hipster joint” where an “eclectic” crowd congregates to drink, “puts some coins in the jukebox” or catches live bands; some say the “badass” space, including a trademark stuffed boar’s head, is “dark and crowded”, but most consider it an “underground gem.”

Raven Grill

“No DC bar has more character” swear devotees of this cash-only old-timer (since 1935) doling out a no-frills selection of PBR brews and mixed drinks (hold the garnishes) to a crew of “fun” regulars and young hipsters in Mount Pleasant; the snug, dark room with vintage booths and a retro jukebox is definitely “small” and “divey” (but in a “cool way”).

3125 Mt Pleasant St NW.; 202-387-8411

Red Derby
Appeal: 26
Decor: 22
Service: 24
This “small” “hipster dive” in Columbia Heights “specializing in canned beer” is a “friendly” place to “chill with friends” on the “great rooftop” or inside in the crimson-hued bar where the eponymous derby hangs; a stock of “excellent board games” ups the “quirky” quotient, while the “laid-back vibe” and “inexpensive” prices (cash only) make it “easy to become a regular.”

Science Club
Appeal: 23
Decor: 20
Service: 19
A saturated solution of “hip” and “quirky” fills this handsome four-story Golden Triangle brownstone that’s a “cool, but mellow spot” where “hipsters” gather for “after-work drinks” or dancing to edgy DJ spins; yes, there are decorative nods to the chem lab and, no, “you don’t actually get your beer in beakers”, but the “deft service” and “nice” patio help assure a “kind of awesome” evening.

1136 19th St NW.; 202-775-0747

Wonderland Ballroom
Appeal: 23
Decor: 18
Service: 20
There’s “no better dance-y bar” than this “off-the-beaten-path” “hipster’s paradise” in Columbia Heights where a “great selection” of beer and some of the “best DJs around” keep the “quality dive” “kicking”; the “attentive” staff doles out “cheap” drinks in a “rustic” two-level space that “can get crowded”, so plan to “enjoy” the “great” outdoor patio; P.S. Tuesday karaoke is “hopping.”
