Crawfish, Hurricanes and Beads: Ten Places to Celebrate Fat Tuesday

Last call for the Mardi Gras menu at the restaurant that specializes in Southern cooking. The family-style meal costs $25 per person and includes barbecued shrimp, po-boys, red beans and rice, chicken and sausage jambalaya and king cake (773-275-5725).

An all-you-can-eat crawfish eating contest judged by yours truly, your Zagat Chicago blogger. The third-annual contest costs $25 to enter and includes a t-shirt as well as prizes for first, second and third place finishers. Proceeds benefit New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity (312-922-8025).

The best place to celebrate Mardi Gras, second to Bourbon Street, is this Nuevo Latin restaurant that will feature live music, Samba dancers, a stilt walker, beads, masks and a Mardi Gras-inspired menu with shrimp and Andouille gumbo as well as blackened redfish (312-850-5005).

Cocktails and a cake, what more does a celebration need? The wine bar will serve “The Big Easy” Hurricane for $13 as well as traditional king cake. Guests who find a baby in their slice don't have to pay for it (312-3374001).

Feast on a Louisiana shrimp boil filled to the brim with potatoes, corn and shrimp for $20 per person. Other special for the Fat Tuesday celebration include $4 Abitas, $5 Hurricanes, $6 Sazeracs and $2 chargrilled oysters. The party will be accompanied by traditional Zydeco and Bluegrass music (773-772-4322).

Bottomless Hurricanes are a very bad idea; luckily they are not a thing. Instead, purchased a HUB Hurricane with Don Q tequila for $10 and it will be served in a complimentary souvenir cup that can be refilled for $6 (312-828-0051).

Two hundred pounds of Louisiana crawfish are on their way to this restaurant and brewery. They will be prepared in a massive crawfish boil and served for $7 per half-pound basket or $12 per pound as well as in fresh gumbo for $3 per cup or $5 per bowl (773-862-8686).

Paris Club
Classy celebrations occur over French Quarter fare at a French restaurant. Enjoy specials such as chicken etouffée and shrimp and Andouille sausage gumbo along with the regular menu (312-595-0800).

Chefs Mike and Pat Sheerin’s creative cuisine takes on a Fat Tuesday twist with holiday specials such as jambalaya Andouille corn dogs. The bar will be serving carbonated Hurricanes (773-661-1540).

New Orleans meets Chicago in the speakeasy-style bar when a Mardi Gras celebration takes over with New Orleans-style second line parade, servers in Venetian masks and an abundance of beads. Join the party or watch from the sidelines while dining on rabbit-crawfish gumbo fritters and chicken jambalaya (312-880-1511).
