Closings: 943, Fluid, The Latest Dish, Union Trust

The empanadas at 943 will be missed
Plenty of openings happening in Philly these days, but unfortunately, we also have a few closings to note.

Last Wednesday was the final service at Pat Cancelliere’s 943 in the Italian Market. The black-and-white tiled Italian-Argentine restaurant just never found a regular crowd, even though those who did try it were fans. The shuttering was very abrupt - we heard about a few folks who had Valentine’s weekend reservations and showed up only to be met by a darkened room. Cancelliere plans to take some time off, then look for a job. [The Insider]

South Street is losing an icon with the closing of Fluid nightclub, which for 16 years was a DJ magnet - it’s where Questlove and The Roots got their start. Questo will return to spin at the final party on April 6. Along with the club, the proprietors will close The Latest Dish, the restaurant that was below it on Fourth Street. [Philly Gossip]

We already knew Union Trust had closed its doors, but now it looks like they might not ever reopen. The grand Chestnut Street steakhouse opened just as the economy tanked and has been struggling to emerge from bankruptcy. Now it appears stone pieces from the mouldings of the historic building have been falling off and landing on the sidewalk. If repairs aren’t made by March 6, the city will tear down the icon, which is a shame - it would be a much greater loss than no more filet mignon. [Philly Chit Chat]
