Best Thing We Ate This Weekend: Picadas de Bistec at Veracruz All-Natural
Until Sunday, I thought the migas taco at Veracruz All-Natural was as good as life gets. At this unassuming trailer on East Cesar Chavez (blink and you’ll miss the sign), owner Reyna Vasquez makes the most amazing tortillas I’ve ever had: they’re thick and almost doughy in that homestyle way. And the flavorful migas inside will rock your day (even Rachael Ray thinks so).
But the picadas de bistec topped even the migas. Think two thick corn tortillas, each pinched at the edges to hold a pool of perfect, dark mole and graced with grated cheese and thin slices of steak. Vasquez pairs the ensemble with refried black beans and sweet fried plantains. Now, I’ve never been a big mole fan, but this mole changed my mind. It’s light in its heaviness, and the chocolate really comes through. (If you’re really not into the sauce, you can get red or green instead.) When you get a bit of each taste for a bite, you might as well be eating at Barley Swine.
Don’t miss the aguas frescas either. The watermelon variety was so fresh it was foamy, and it’s just the sweetness you need after such a decadent breakfast.
