never have too much pork. Two, that Philadelphia has another sandwich that is as messy and delicious and maybe just a tad more healthy (vegetables!) than the cheesesteak. And it took going to a Santa Monica restaurant to find out about it. Josie LeBalch's sloppy roast pork sandwich is an homage to the Philly staple, which is traditionally thinly sliced pork topped with sauteed broccoli rabe (or spinach), provolone and mayo. At Next Door by Josie, the chef's more casual spot adjacent to her original Josie, she ups the ante by topping the roast pork with fried rapini, aged provolone and garlic mayo.
We love the crunch from the frizzled rapini, which also adds a bit of bitterness to the sandwich. It is indeed sloppy, coming to the table looking like you'll need a fork, but once you smoosh the hoagie roll together, you get a bite of everything all at once. Truly delicious.
