Best Thing We Ate Last Night: The Umami Hatch Burger

What burger rules the West? That’s the question that Sunset magazine and Chefs Feed put to L.A. chef Ricardo Zarate (Mo-Chica and Picca) in their forthcoming All-Food Issue (due out on February 22) and his answer was this: The Hatch Burger, at Umami Burger. We got to taste that wicked delicious burger that graces the cover of their March issue (albeit in a miniature adapted version) at a preview party held down at Sunset headquarters last night, and we have to concur. The burger, which is slathered with garlic mayo and charred poblano chilies, topped with melted American cheese and sprinkled with “umami dust” and nestled inside a grilled sweet Hawaiian roll, is as good as advertised. You’ll have to wait until the magazine is out to get a copy of the recipe, but in the meantime head to Umami Burger at 2184 Union Street and spend $10 to enjoy the beefy goodness yourself.
