Certainly this meal did not occur last night, but as we just got back from a four-day bender of eating and drinking in Miami, we've got a few recent meals on file that we feel the need to rave about. The folks that brought you Asian gastropub Pubbelly and ex-Scarpetta chef Michael Pirolo are doing Miami proud with Macchialina - a tiny, neighborhood small plates Italian that's putting its own spin on pizza, pasta and red sauce classics. Away from the madness of the SoBe strip this joint is packing them in even on a Sunday night. As for the food - the tortino de melanzane (eggplant parmigiano) here is done daintily in a small portion, resembling almost an eggplant terrine and served in a small baking dish atop red sauce with crusty slices of garlic-rubbed toast. The stromboli filled with homemade meatballs, mozzarella and spinach is not what you'll find at your local pizza joint. And the lasagna with short ribs and taleggio cheese is one of the most indulgent takes on the dish that we've ever had. If you're venturing down to Miami this winter, this joint is a must-try.
