Best Thing We Ate: Gumbo Ya Ya at the Gumbo Pot

There are just some things that plant themselves in our head and we can't shake it. Once things like an In-N-Out Double Double, a martini at Musso's or a Godmother from Bay Cities plants themselves in our head, we're done. We must have - now. That's what happened yesterday with gumbo. After talking about Mardi Gras all day, we craved the gumbo Ya Ya from The Gumbo Pot at the Original Farmers Market. Now, Mardi Gras is a big deal at the market. There are roving bands, beads and it's even more crowded than usual. But we waited in line and got our gumbo, found a table and devoured it.

We prefer the Ya Ya more than the seafood gumbo because it's meatier, with chicken and andouille sausage, and just richer. The seafood gumbo is still very good, just more mild in flavor. Honestly, we'd never turn either down. Of course we had beignets for dessert, sillies. It was Mardi Gras! Luckily it doesn't have to be Fat Tuesday to enjoy either one; they're always available.
