“Classic dining” turns up at this “venerable” 1894 Bouldin Creek estate – ranked No. 1 for Decor in Austin – where peacocks stroll the “lovely” grounds and the “beautiful” setting is a mainstay for weddings and celebratory Sunday brunches; in comparison, some find the “expensive” Continental cuisine “ordinary”, although coddling service and the signature milk punch makes it an “old Texas favorite.”

“Fancy barbecue” is the forte of this “classy” ‘cue stop set in “gentlemanly” digs in the “historic” Schneider Brothers Building in the Second Street District; charcuterie, steaks and other Traditional American dishes round out the menu, while a “generous” brunch buffet is quite the draw on weekends; P.S. the “cool” upstairs bar features live music most nights.

The “creative” interior Mex (“not Tex-Mex”) fare is “reason enough alone” to love these Austin “reliables” also prized for their modest bills and boozy Sunday brunch with “live music”; the Downtown original is “dark and hip”, while the Arboretum offshoot is more “airy” and open with an oak-lined patio that’s popular for sipping “terrific cocktails” during happy hour.

This “solid” local chain serves up “B+ Tex-Mex”, including all-day breakfasts, to a loyal base, but critics “don’t get the hype”, claiming “everything is just smothered in cheese”; the vibe is “kid-friendly” and the space is well-suited to groups, so expect a “loud” atmosphere along with “a bit of a wait” at peak hours.

“Incredibly cozy” wine bar Downtown “attracts pretty people in the know” with an “intricate” New American menu that includes snacky plates of cured meats as well as pasta and a rightly famous pancetta-and-egg burger; the “tiny” spot fills up fast, so “get there early” or you may end up “standing on a busy night.”

“An icon in Austin, and rightly so”, this Downtown mainstay dishes out “traditional” takes on “all the usual” ‘cue with live music nightly; some say they “expected more” from the food, but at least the bands and the “charming” digs in an 1830s “old brick building” “never disappoint.”

Tacos & Tequila
This hip Southwestern in Old West Austin dishes up boldly seasoned meat tacos, burritos and more in a cool, modern setting featuring video art, DJs and live music; an extensive array of tequilas and cocktails plus a killer happy hour are more reasons why it has a steady local following; P.S. a portion of the proceeds from sales of its ‘Good Karma’ tableside guacamole go to local charity Austin Pets Alive.
