  1. Mission Chinese Food has a "sterling" reputation in San Francisco only among white hipsters who don't know Chinese food from La Choy. To most Chinese, and people who love Chinese food, it's a heavy-handed travesty.

    1. Right you are! Although I'm a native of the City, most good restaurants are not the ones with the most advertising. There are some great ones in Hong Kong (of course), Bangkok, and even San Francisco! Happy hunting!

    2. Seems like both places that made the national food press frenzy from San Francisco this year (MCF and State Bird) started with some extraordinary PR buzz, then attracted clueless buzz followers, and when tried by more knowledgable or discerning types consistently turned out to be mediocre crowd pleasers. Neither of these places deserves to be on a top ten list for SF, never mind the world. They aren't bad, if you are in the neighborhood and the lines are unusually short, but something is wrong when these places turn up on so many best restaurant lists.

    3. right on TomSF! these are just buzz restaurants, nothing special, and certainly not the best in the world. SF has so many good restaurants, it is a shame such lists might find followers.

    4. Notice the picture of the people who eat there.
      It does not look Asian.
Yes, go to true Chinatown, or Hong Kong for real Chinese food, not some concoction that is so westernized and overpriced.

    5. I have eaten at Mission Chinese Food in NYC. I didn't find the food overly impressive. Spicey and hot to be sure but. very heavy handed. The entrees had far to liitle of the food that you ordered them for and far too much of the extra 'fillers'. In my opinion, there is a much, much better chinese restaurant just around the corner on 2nd ave between 7th. and 8th. The menu is geniune Chinese, and the customers, from my experience, are almost always 90% Asian.

    6. Oh you silly knowitalls. MCF doesn't claim to be traditional Chinese! Stop comparing it to your favorite hole in the wall.

  4. Hold on a minute! You're saying that "Parish," a restaurant that recently opened in downtown Los Angeles is one of the hottest restaurants in the world? Gimme a break!

  5. I dont think so.

Maybe Atera in New York and Atelier Crenn in SF but those you listed, sounds like an ad to me.

    1. So you´ve tried Ekstedts and don´t agree with its top 10 spot??

      Delete
    2. No I have not tried Ekstedts, in fact I have never been in Sweden. I have though eaten at Celler de Can roca and Azrak both in Spain, Noma in Denmark, Pujol in mexico city, Jiros and many better in Tokyo, Alina in Chicago, FAt Duck back in the day, FL in CA and a bunch in between...and feel pretty well versed in restaurants and to me, since Mr and Mrs Zagat sold to Google, the level of thought and actual quality based coverage in the new Zagat lay out has been more on the level of advertisements sprinkled with some reality based findings. I would be remiss, myself to publish an article on the hottest new restaurants in the world and not put in it, for instance, Atera in NY and Atelier Crenn in SF...among others.

  7. First Bon Appetit and now Zagat has fallen for the scam known as State Bird Provisions in San Francisco. This is a concept restaurant, not a food restaurant. And it's a ripped-off concept restaurant at that: put small plates on dim-sum style carts and wheel them around the restaurant for diners to "choose" from. And continue the dim-sum theme with gruff service and unintelligible explanations of what is on those small plates (and why it's so bland and uninteresting).

    That's it.

Look for the franchise version of this to arrive in a mall near you soon.

Most overrated restaurant of the decade.

    1. Concept restaurant or not - it may still be one of the hottest places to eat!..
I'm from Europe and haven't been to SF since 1992 so I'm not in anyway connected to the restaurant but to me it doesn't matter if it's a concept restaurant or a "food restaurant" (whatever that means… all restaurants server food in some way).

As you may have seen most fancy and hot restaurants serve small amounts of food, often on a big plate - but it's delicious! :)

      Delete
    2. Sorry if I wasn't clear: the food here is bland, not distinctive, and not delicious.
The only thing interesting about this place is the concept (the dim-sum rip off), and that is not enough to offset the fact that the food is NOT worthy of any praise.

  8. Don't forget the uber cool new entrance in Madrid gastronomic scene: the Mexican PuntoMX http://www.puntomx.es/

  9. "Twice in a row" voted "the best restaurant" Noma, from Copenhagen, didn't even make it on the list?! I'm starting to question Zagat's reliability!

  10. Very cool to see that 20% of them are in Sweden, the small Nordic country with only 9 million inhabitants. And Fäviken is located in a place where only 10000 people lives in a community over 8 236,54 km² (2 035 293,36 acres) - that's only 1,44 inhabitant per km² (1 km² is 247.105381 acres)!

Read more about this small, but fantastic restaurant who has been mentioned a lot as one of the best restaurants in Sweden and also in the World! :D

  12. Ugh, this list is a joke. But then again, Zagat has become a joke. When a supposedly serious restaurant guide becomes all about how "hot" a restaurant is as opposed to how good it is, is when you start to think the Mayans were right after all.

La Dame de Pic in Paris? It may be "hot" because it opened not long ago, but that sure doesn't mean it's great. For those who read French (or those who use Google Translate), check out the comments here:

    http://www.gillespudlowski.com/58498/restaurants/la-dame-de-pic-paris-1er-un-evenement-parisien#.UOVRjan19Zs

In spite of Gille Pudlowski's surprisingly positive review, the comments are almost unanimously negative, as in "hated it". It won't be "hot" for long.

I used to think Zagat was a bit lame before Tim and Nina sold out to Google, now I think it's just stupid.

  13. So, 2 of the 10 hottest restaurants in the world (according to Zagat) are run by jämtlanders; Magnus Nilsson of Fäviken Magasinet and Niklas Ekstedt of Ekstedt. Even more interestingly, both Nilsson and Ekstedt studied at the same restaurant school in Jämtland not far from where Fäviken Magasinet is located.

  14. With only 3 continents represented, I doubt it's the worlds hottest restaurants.

  19. MADRID CAPITAL

CHEF ALBERTO CHICOTE OF PAN DE LUJO ON JORGE JUAN 20:

Chicote links some of his recipes to music, and merges regional Spanish and Japanese ... The assimilation of Japanese ingredients with Mediterranean techniques, with fish is a cornerstone in both nations ... His fresh variations are extraordinaire. We had the:

duck foie gras served with carrot marmalade on Cantabrian bread
Beetroot crisps served with a Russian Potato salad
    Hummus with a honey drizzle
baby eel wrapped in banana leaves
    seam bream seared on flame
    oven baked apple pie

WINE; White burgundy PropriéTaire Elveur 2004 Laurent Tribut

    Lovely ...

    Thanks Alberto.
