Hot Diggity is hot right now. The South Street hot dog joint just scored a nod from UnderConsideration as having the best menu design in the entire United States in 2012, and will make its national TV debut this week on the Travel Channel’s Hot Dog Paradise (set your DVR for Wednesday at 11 PM). Of even more interest to hungry Philadelphians is the return of the Buffalo Buffalo Dog as the featured frank of the month.
We were lucky enough to try this creation last time it came around, and it may be the greatest hot dog ever. A frankfurter custom made from buffalo meat by D’Angelo Bros. in the Italian Market is topped with Maytag blue cheese, chopped celery, house hot-and-honey wing sauce, buttermilk chive dressing and chicken cracklings. This tip of the hat to the traditional wing dish might be even better than the original, and it’s definitely less messy to eat.
When you stop in to try the crunchy buffalo bun, wash it down one of the new flavors of housemade soda. There are several options, including yerba mate honey ginger ale and one made from the PA-native fruit paw paw, but the most intriguing has to be spicy PB&J, inspired by the Federal Donuts fancy donut of the same name. Let us know how it is if you try it (267-886-9253).
