Closing Time: Italian Restaurants Struggle and a Few Favorites Shutter

We warned you it was going to happen; we just didn’t think it would be so soon. Great Lake closed last weekend due to a disagreement with the property owner. The popular pizza place will likely relocate, but has no concrete plans at this time.

Tapas lounge and live music venue, People, closed this past weekend. They have been serving south of six corners for seven years. Another long-standing establishment also recently closed. After 20-years in operation, Zealous served it’s last plate of globally influenced American fare.

The Promontory and chef Matthias Merges’ new Hyde Park restaurant cannot open soon enough for the neighborhood that lost one of its few eateries. Park 52, the American restaurant with a southern twist boasted mediocre food in a vibrant atmosphere, shuttered earlier this month.

C-House in the MileNorth hotel, which was opened in 2008 by chef Marcus Sammuelsson, closed this weekend. The restaurant space as well as the lobby and coffee bar will undergo renovations before reopening as a more casual concept.

The suburbs once again prove to be a hazardous stomping ground for urban chefs. Chef John des Rosier’s Moderno, an Italian restaurant serving small plates made with local ingredients, closed late last year to reopen as Royce. Royce, features a more approachable farm-to-table menu of burgers, appetizers, salads and desserts.

While diners were away for holiday, Allementari took a little vacation too – a permanent one as a result of owing $150,000 in back rent. The six-month-old restaurant closed its doors just before the New Year leaving a prime bit of Randolph Street real estate up for grabs.
