Best Thing We Ate Yesterday: The Guisados Sampler

When we happened by the new Guisados in Echo Park around 1 PM yesterday, there was a line out the door. So we kept on driving. But passing it again on the return a few hours later, there were only a couple of people in the dining room eating their tacos, which meant we couldn't resist stopping for an early dinner. This is the same outfit from the family that runs the Boyle Heights taqueria, the one heralded by Jonathan Gold and just about everyone else for its homestyle braised meats, hand-made corn tortillas and spicy-hot fresh salsas.

Although the menu is small at Guisados, we still find it impossible to choose what we want, especially if we're hungry. So we get the sampler - six mini tacos for $6.99. You can't beat it, really. You get a taste of the most popular stews: two beef (bistek en salsa rojo, steak picado), two chicken (tinga, mole) and two pork (cochinita pibil and chicharron). Each one was our favorite...until we bit into the next taco. With a cantaloupe agua fresca, the whole shebang cost less than 10 bucks. Now you understand the lines.
