Where to Enjoy the Feast of the Seven Fishes in Philadelphia

Traditionally served on Christmas Eve, the Feast of the Seven Fishes is an old Italian tradition. Though it was originally intended to commemorate the wait for the midnight birth of baby Jesus, it’s been adapted by Italian-Americans into a celebration of eating great seafood during the Christmas season. From prix fixe tasting menus to paellas, check out seven ways to enjoy your holiday fish in Philadelphia.

Le Castagne
Chef Michael DeLone is offering a six-plus course tasting menu made up of traditional holiday seafood dishes at this Rittenhouse Italian. Start with baccala carpaccio, continue through a cioppino stew and finish with housemade holiday cookies for $75 per person, now through December 24 (215-751-9913).

Ristorante Panorama
The Front Street Italian is offering the “Festa dei Sette Pesci” every night through December 24 for $45 per person. From seared sea scallop to baccala salad to lobster tortelloni, seafood makes its appearance in four courses, which can be paired with three-ounce pours of wine for an additional $30 (215-922-7600).

It’s seven fishes Latin-style at this Bryn Mawr tequila bar. Chef Nick Farina has designed a special paella with mussels, clams, scallops, shrimp, calamari, salt cod and a whole Maine lobster that will feed four hungry adults for a grand total of $62. It’s available any time through Christmas Eve (610-520-9100).

Another way to get your feast all in one bowl is with the seven fish bouillabaisse dreamed up by Marco De Cottis, newly installed chef this East Passyunk Italian. The soup is built on a lobster consommé with shrimp, scallops, mussels, clams, crab, calamari and fresh, flakey white fish and is available for $23 per bowl from December 18-30 (267-319-1678).

Avalon Restaurant and Avalon Pasta Bistro
Chef John Brandt-Lee is offering a five-course prix fixe seafood menu at both his West Chester and Downingtown BYOs every evening from December 21-24. The $45 per person ($15 for kids under 12) feast is designed to be enjoyed family style, and includes fried smelts, sautéed skate wing and a cheese dessert course (610-436-4100 and 610-873-4200).

The Vetri Family trattoria has made an annual tradition of a one-night-early seven fishes feast. On December 23 from 4-9 PM, chef Brad Spence will offer a four-course, seven-seafood meal for $65 per person. Reservations are recommended (215-732-2647).

A seven fishes feast will be offered on the classic date of Christmas Eve at this Northern Italian steakhouse in Rittenhouse. Make a reservation from 5-11 PM to enjoy dishes like Maine lobster bisque, shrimp toast, steamed mussels, pan-seared branzino and more for $75 per person (215-563-4810).
