The Best Thing We Ate on Christmas Day: Puerto Rican Food

Maybe sunshine and sand don’t invoke traditional holiday images, but while visiting San Juan for Christmas, the food was certainly festive. Holiday food in Puerto Rico means a season of eating some very specific dishes, including lechon (whole roasted pig); pasteles (root vegetable tamales); morcilla (blood sausage); arroz con gandules (rice with pigeon peas); and guineos en escabeche (green bananas marinated in vinegar). The best part of celebrating in the islands: the holiday feasts don’t end at Christmas—these delicacies are abundantly served until Three Kings Day on January 6.
