Restaurant Horror Stories: Customers and Servers Behaving Badly

Not every visit to a restaurant goes so smoothly. The waitstaff insulting you to your face is never really fun. And everyone who's ever worked as a waitress or bartender knows that some customers are just downright crazy. In honor of Service Week, we put out the word for tales of restaurant visits gone wrong, and some good horror stories were sent our way. Some are about customers behaving badly. Others are about servers who are just way out of line. All are examples of things you probably wouldn't want to deal with when you're spending good money to go out on the town.

Click through the slide show to see some tales of dining woe, and let us know about your equally bad experiences in the comments.

  1. Some of these were interesting, but you probably could have left out the Olive Garden story. The woman obviously has some issues, and the whole tale just ended up making me feel bad.

  2. How about people who will use a coupon with dinner and then leave a tip based on the after coupon amount? Any fool knows you tip on the PRE coupon amount. Someone I know was once treated to dinner by the owner and THEN had the nerve to leave NO tip for the waitstaff.

  3. i was at an expensive restaurant in PGA in fla. the waitress dropped the dirty dishes on the table as she was clearing the table. immediately i grabbed my neck and yelled whiplash started making jokes and at the end we got free desserts , coffee and liquor. anybody can make light of a bad situation and no need to throw additional embarrassment on an already freaked out server.

    1. In another century I was pretty new to waiting tables. I had cut a finger earlier and had a bandaid on it. In preparing salads for a former schoolmate and his family, I - you guessed it - lost the bandaid and didn't realize it. It turned up in his grandmother's salad. I was mortified, they laughed and left a decent tip.

  4. All mussels are subject to rocks, sand, bits of shell, etc. It's got nothing to do with where the mussels were caught. It's the nature of the beast. They open their shells to feed. It's not uncommon for something to get caught in the shell when it closes. Most restaurants will steam mollusks seperate from the served sauce to prevent grit, sand, and stone from getting into the sauce. Finally, if a mussel is that hard to open, discard it. If it didn't open when it was being cooked, it's because it was already dead when placed into the liquid.

  6. I wouldn't recommend that ANYONE go to Vicolo. My sister, her daughter in law and granddaughter went there for a girls night out. My sister has celiac disease and can't have anything flour or wheat based. When she ordered, she ordered grilled salmon and potatos. They waited close to an hour for their food, and first the granddaughters food came out. A while later, the daughter in law's food came out a little while later the waiter arrives with my sisters food proclaiming "here's your chilean sea bass". My sister informed him it was the wrong order and reminded him of what she ordered and that she could not have flour or wheat. They quickly brought out her order covered with bread crumbs. Granddaughter and daughter in law have already finished eating and they paid the bill. My sis asked to speak to the owner on the way out and politely told him of her experience. His response? "Get this bitch out of my store!" Her daughter in law asked the owner not to talk to my sister that way and the owner called her a "puerto rican whore" and actually threatened to punch DIL in mouth. This is all in front of DIL's 13 year old daughter. The owner told them to go back to "burger king" and proceeded to chase them out of the restaurant while screaming threats and profanities at them. Waiters had to hold him back.

  8. Did you see what this woman did after going to a restaurant? She posted a vlog of her 'horrible experience', but clearly she's just crazy! http://youtu.be/porMCt6BRr0
