Los Angeles Dining Deals and Events, Dec. 17-23

Third Wednesdays at City Tavern
Whether you celebrate Meatless Mondays or not, tonight get a special three-course menu based on local author Joseph Shuldiner's Pure Vegan cookbook at Mohawk Bend tonight. The menu - celery root and fennel chowder; polenta with wild mushrooms, hazelnuts and figs; pistachio olive oil cake - is $40 with the cookbook or $20 on its own. Shuldiner will be on hand to sign cookbooks and talk all things vegan. 7-10 PM (2141 W. Sunset Blvd.; 213-483-2337).

Stop by Angel City Brewing with clothing donations for the Midnight Mission, and you'll get a first-peek tour of the forthcoming Arts District brewery. The mission is in need of gently worn or new men's suits, collard button-down shirts, ties, and sneakers and dress shoes (especially larger sizes), or five or more non-perishable food items. Donations are being accepted at the brewery's side entrance all week from noon to 6 PM through December 21 (216 S. Alameda St.; 213-622-1261).

Check out drink specials at Downtown Culver City's Third Wednesdays tonight, this time with a holiday twist. Check out the Christmas tree, listen to carolers, and the outdoor ice skating rink will have a two-for-one skate special. City Tavern has free shots of spiced egg nog, Ford's Filling Station has $4 beers, Meet features all-you-can-eat mussels for $26.95, and get free mulled cider with the purchase of dinner at K-Zo. Check out this map for more specials.

Do a little shoe shopping at the new TOMS flagship store on Abbot Kinney, if only to grab a cup of Cafecito Organico coffee, some snacks from Valerie Confections or fresh juices from Pressed Juicery - the store's cafe features all three LA-based companies (1344 Abbot Kinney Blvd.).

If the world didn't end, go dine or drink by one of these fab fireplaces, eat some tamales, or find some other holiday cheer around town.

Speaking of holiday cheer, it's time to get your Rosca de Reyes (Mexican Epiphany Bread) from La Monarca Bakery. The cake with the baby Jesus hidden inside is available at all locations now through January 6. It's delicious for non-denomination dining, too - you can even get it by the slice. The Pasadena location will open sometime next month, but probably not in time for the Epiphany.

Love whiskey? Sundays are for whiskey lovers at Townhouse featuring a new rotating menu of monthly specials, including $5 Buffalo Trace, $7 Old Fashioneds or Sazeracs, or a tasting flight for $20. Come January, food specials will be added to the mix (52 Windward Ave.; 310-392-4040).
