Inside Look: Anthony’s Chocolate House

Nearly 100 years ago, just off the boat from Italy, the Anastasios began selling fruits and vegetables from a pushcart along Ninth Street in South Philly. As the Italian Market began to take shape, members of the family branched out to open permanent shops, including a fish market and a produce store that still does brisk wholesale business today. In 1996, fourth-generation proprietor Anthony Anastasio opened Anthony’s Italian Coffee House, and in 2003 expanded operations with the launch of Anthony’s Chocolate House a few doors down.

We stopped in for a chat and an inside look at the confectionery, which makes the majority of its huge assortment of sweets in house. A few specialty items, like sugar-free candies and baked goods, are sourced from local producers, and some chocolates are imported from Italy, but most of the lineup is made on site. Click through the slide show below to get up close and personal with a variety of tempting treats.
