Del Mercato Opens in Borough Market for All Your Italian Needs
By Michael Parker
The small but perfectly formed cluster of interesting restaurants, shops and cafes that have sprung up around the immensely popular Borough Market are joined by Del Mercato, which opens today. A new venture from the owners of Vinopolis, with which it shares the cavernous space under the arches, the newcomer hopes to be all things to all people: a formal Italian restaurant, a less informal trattoria serving lighter dishes, an on-site bakery, and a bar serving coffee, traditional Italian aperitifs and spritzers like Aperol, Negroni and Rossini plus the ever-popular Prosecco. Headed up by chef Stefano Motta (formerly head chef at Latium and La Briciole), the restaurant takes 70 covers and, unsurprisingly, boasts a serious wine list.
