Best Thing We Ate Yesterday: Porto's Potato Balls

We love flying out of Bob Hope Airport in Burbank for obvious reasons: fewer lines, cheaper parking, less hassle and of course walking on the tarmac. But we'd be remiss if we didn't add stopping at Porto's Bakery & Cafe before or after a flight. The newer Cuban bakery, though already several years old now, is a much larger, always-packed second location of the always-packed Glendale location, and it's right on our drive to the airport.

It's like a magnetic force of papas rellenas that just pulls you in, but few can resist a mashed potato ball stuffed with flavorful ground beef, breaded and fried to a perfect golden brown. So we left with a dozen to share and a Cubano sandwich, which is also perfect in its ham, pork loin, pickle and mustard goodness. In fact, props to Porto's for excellent customer service - we were overwhelmed with our boxes of potato balls and pastries (guava and cheese flaky ones) that we left the sandwich behind. A couple of hours later when we returned, they replaced it immediately, no hassels. Maybe it's a Burbank thing.
