Weekender Planner: Comedy, Zins and Dante's Calzone Smackdown

Tonight, Friday, here’s what we recommend. If you can, snag a seat to see one of the city’s hottest comedians, Orlando Baxter, playing at 8:30 PM  (and through the weekend) at the Beantown Comedy Vault, which is located in Remington's in the Theater District. The show time also gives you plenty of time to grab dinner at Remington's or check out Jean-Georges' Market’s three-course pre-theater menu at the nearby W Hotel Boston (5-6:30 PM; $40 per person; 617-310-6790).

Warm up at The Fireplace in Brookline this Saturday during the Fireside Chat featuring a glass of Zinfandel and a few nibbles (3-4:15 PM; $25-$30 per person; 617-975-1900).

Also on Saturday, big news in the local food and broadcast world: NECN’s TV Diner launches a whole new look. The food and lifestyle program hosted by Billy Costa and Jenny Johnson will kick off their first season’s episode 10 AM Saturday. TV Diner will make its new home at Quincy Market in Boston and feature programs like Top 5, where the show will focus on one dish and five places that do that dish the best; Behind the Design, showing the secrets of putting a successful restaurant design together; reviews and more. Catch the show on NECN Saturdays, 10 AM and 7 PM, and weeknights at 7:30 PM.

This Sunday Dante dares you to witness (and taste your way through) the Unknown Calzone Dethrone – a cook-off competition starring major flavor makers who will offer their versions of the calzone. You’ll taste the interpretations of meat, seafood and veggie-filled creations from the likes of Jamie Bissonnette (Coppa, Toro), Mary Dumont (Harvest), Louis DiBiccari (Storyville), Josh Ziskin (La Morra) and more. This is the sixth annual cook-off hosted by Dante, which focuses on a different dish each year.
