Long before everyone was debating the
optimal meat blend for their burgers (yes, there was a day that Pat LaFrieda wasn't a household name),
Island Burger was flipping bigger than average patties at their tiny shop in Hell's Kitchen, keeping them nice and pink in the middle and loading them with crazy amounts of toppings. For our last day of Burger Week, we decided to revisit one of the original champions of elevating the burger beyond the tasty though familiar. The burger shack has withstood the test of time, making an appearance on the list of
NYC's best.
The dozens of options on this menu combine bread, toppings and condiments in pretty much every way imaginable - we opted for the simple Mike's Pool Hall, featuring jack cheese and onions on rye bread. Cheap, meaty and delicious, we figured it was a fitting blaze of glory to bring our burger coverage to an end.
