Pure Tacos has been slinging gluten-free tacos, nachos and salads on Chestnut Street in Rittenhouse for just over five months now, so it’s a good time to throw something new into the mix. Chef/manager/marketing whiz Josiah Andrews has come up with a series of bi-weekly specials, to be announced each Tuesday via the shop’s social media accounts. First up is the steakhouse taco. We had a chance to sample the new offering over the weekend, and can report it’s a great addition to the lineup.
Achiote-marinated steak is sliced and grilled to order, then tucked into the double-layered soft masa shell with pepper-crusted, sautéed mushrooms and a housemade scallion cream sauce you’ll wish you could take home by the quart. The best part is the final topping: a handful of Cajun-spice-dusted fried onions, which add crunch and flavor to each bite. The special runs $9 for two tacos and a healthy portion of freshly-fried chips.
There’s more to look forward to, because we also got a sneak peek at the Thanksgiving taco, which starts its run next week. What’s exciting about it? Just a snappy combo of house-smoked turkey, fried turkey skin, housemade pumpkin purée, apple-fennel slaw, toasted pumpkin seeds and dried cranberries, is all. This is a taco that will make you feel healthy, but still packs serious flavor. Not your grandma’s Thanksgiving dinner, but definitely a worthy substitute for another boring leftover turkey sandwich lunch.
