Mikawaya in Little Tokyo are to honor Frances Hashimoto, the president of the bakery and ice cream company who died on Sunday. You can't walk out of a Trader Joe's or Ralph's without a box of the frozen treats, but the specialty originated here in LA, and it's at its best when eaten at the little shop at Japanese Village Plaza Mall. Hashimoto's family has owned the sweets shop since 1910, but when she took over at the age of 27, she created the mochi-wrapped ice cream balls, which are now almost as common as Popsicles. According to the LA Times, the plaza will be renamed after her. We'll toast our frozen mochi balls to that.
