The Caulfield, which opened earlier this year, takes its moniker from everyone's favorite teenage curmudgeon. Tomorrow, a SoHo watering hole is going even further back in time, taking inspiration from Virginia Woolf's famous hostess. The Dalloway will open in the bi-level space that used to house Lani Kai. The spot came up with a new term to describe itself: "lesbian implied."
Though it's sure to be friendly to all comers, it's co-owned by Amanda Leigh Dunn from Showtime's The Real L Word and should prove to be one of the more upscale LGBT-oriented bars on the Downtown scene. Upstairs, there will be an array of small plates served by candlelight - think chipotle-crusted Ahi tuna. Downstairs the focus will be on cocktails, with drinks named after the famous Ms. Woolf, like the To The Lighthouse," which is made with tequila, ginger, lime, jalapeno and egg white.
The bar/restaurant split has been tried in this space before, by Lani Kai and Tailor before that. Lani had a good run, and it will be interesting to see if the new owners can make it work for a longer run (525 Broome Street).
