Holiday Happenings in DC Metro

ICE!Shrek The Halls
The winter holiday season seems to start earlier each year. Our turkey isn’t even on the table, yet, our virtual mailboxes are filled with invitations to spirited events. Here are some of the early highlights.

November 16 – January 6: Gaylord National Resort in National Harbor stages a Christmas on the Potomac extravaganza with indoor snowfalls, light shows, a 60-foot tall glass Christmas tree and two million dazzling lights. The spectacular ICE! Featuring DreamWorks’ Shrek the Halls is an indoor frozen attraction carved from two million pounds of colorful ice kept at a chill nine degrees (warm clothes provided). Guests walk through an animated pageant with five, two-story-tall ice slides. Hours and ticket prices vary; gohere for more information about the pageant and other special activities.

November 23: The Ritz-Carlton Tysons Corner unveils its walk-in, life-sized gingerbread house. in its lobby. Visitors can shop for fresh pastries and treats, opening day will feature hot spiced cider, roasted chestnuts and hot cocoa. The house is open through December 24. Go here to check out holiday events like gingerbread house decorating classes and a princess tea (1700 Tysons Blvd., McLean, VA).

November 29: The Fairmont hotel in the West End is hosting its annual tree lighting ceremony with holiday refreshments, madrigal singers, crafts for children and photos with Santa and Rudolph (5:30-7 PM; no admission, but guests are asked to bring an unwrapped gift for Toys for Tots; 2401 M St. NW).

December 1-22: The Willard Hotel’s annual Holiday Lobbying program that offers free live choral concerts every night (except Sunday) in its gloriously decorated Downtown lobby. Perfect for meeting friends for holiday cheer in elegant surroundings. Check out the music schedule, and its holiday teas and other special events here (5:30-7:30 PM; 1401 Pennsylvania Ave. NW).
