Hardware Bar Opens, Boxers Starts Construction in Hell's Kitchen

Chelsea's time as NYC's gay nightlife destination is over, at least judging by the crazy amount of gay bars that are opening in up-and-coming Hell's Kitchen. The latest debut is Hardware Bar, a new watering hole (in a space that used to house a hardware store) on burgeoning  strip of 10th Avenue from the team that runs Pieces in the West Village. The establishment doesn't deviate from the typical formula - there's television screens showing music videos in the front of the space, a stage for performances in the back that's blinged out with a giant disco ball, and moderately priced being served at the no frills bar. Just beware - it's cash only, and the onsite ATM charges a $3 fee - ouch (687 10th Ave.).

A few blocks away on Ninth Avenue, Chelsea sports-themed bar Boxers has started construction on their second location, which will be housed in the large corner digs that used to house Terrazza Toscana. Signage is up telling residents that the new haunt is coming, and it will reportedly have three floors of space where you can get your drank on, including an open-air roof deck. A while back, the bar tried to open on 10th Avenue, and was denied since that location was too close to a school. This new venue is on a more trafficked strip, so it all worked out in the end. No word yet on opening date (742 Ninth Ave.).
