Starting today, get 30 percent off the entire Mo-Chica menu for happy hour. The catch? It's only 30 minutes of bliss, from 5:30 to 6:30 PM. But that's just enough time to taste the alpaca-lamb burger, oxtail over trigo de mote, paiche topped with cherry tomato escabeche, and other Peruvian specialties at Ricardo Zarate's Downtown LA restaurant. The discount applies to drinks, too. The 30/30 deal is available daily through the month of November (514 W. 7th St.; 213-622-3744).
Head over to Saam, the hidden dining room at The Bazaar at the SLS Hotel, for a little cocktail magic with barman Rob Floyd on Sunday (Nov. 4, 6-7 PM). He'll teach you the fundamentals of classic Mad Men-style cocktails seen through the eyes of Jose Andres. That means a retrospective on bourbon, rye and vodka; a lesson on vermouth (French vs. Italian); and demos on how to craft the perfect Moscow Mule, Gimlet and Manhattan. The latter with a liquid, spherified cherry, of course. Class is $50 and includes tastings. Call 310-246-5555 for reservations (465 S. La Cienega Blvd.).
Think you can win an all-you-can-eat sushi contest? Now's your chance. Enter at the Japanese Food Festival, which takes place around the garden at the DoubleTree Hotel in Little Tokyo. You'll also learn about and taste ramen and soba, watch how to filet a giant tuna, and see sushi chefs compete against each other. And there will be plenty of Sopporo, sake and sochu to sip. Sunday, Nov. 4, 11 AM-3 PM; tickets are $60 for all you can eat and drink (120 S. Los Angeles St.).
