Pizzalina in San Anselmo is the BEST!
ReplyDeleteJohnny's pizzeria in mt. Vernon, new york. Hands down, best pizza ever.
DeleteI work in the restaurant business and Lucca in the Back Bay has the best food around. I highly recommend it. It is between the colonnade and Marriott Back Bay hotels on Huntington avenue.
DeleteThe phrase "Really? REALLY?" springs to mind. I guess I can only be glad that California wasn't on your list. And, despite that I am a NY pizza person through & through, I have to wonder how no representation of Chicago (bleh) deep-dish was listed when you included that weird aberration that is Detroit-style pizza.
ReplyDeleteF
Buddy's pizza is the best. A on this article! Bravo great work to the author. I bet you think you're funny and smart for using the word "aberration." But you're not. And you're not popular, or pretty. Only smart and pretty people eat at Buddys. Chicago deep dish is great, if you're planning on gaining on putting on 7 pounds at dinner.
DeleteCalifornia is on the list. :))
DeleteYou missed one or more of the world-class pizzerias in Old Forge, PA, e.g., Arcaro and Genell's. The white pizza is worth a journey.
ReplyDeleteGo Gate!
ReplyDeleteSo thrilled to see my favorite all-time pizza destination, Tacconelli's, in this list. The white pie with spinach and plum tomatoes never disappoints. It's garlicky and delicious. Simple ingredients, perfectly delivered to your table. The white pie with whatever else you prefer is definitely the way to go, regardless. And don't forget to order the delicious hot peppers marinating in oil on the side. Been going there for over 30 years, and it's the first place I like to eat when I fly all the way back there from LA. It's usually a family and friends event, and we get a big table, place our order for around 15 doughs; (we're big eaters,) and don't worry about the leftovers - I eat whatever slices wind up being taken home through the rest of my visit, and my cousins plan on one going home to their freezers. It's also a good idea to have them half-bake your pie if you plan on taking it out and finishing it off per their instructional handout when you get home, if you can't get all of your group down to Port Richmond from out in the burbs, or wherever. The Tacconelli family is extremely friendly and accommodating, and it's a must to put in your order early in the day to make sure the haven't sold out by the time you go, as they're a small business that prefers not to throw out leftover dough, and I've gotten there in the past to find a "sold out" sign on the door, as they're extremely popular. Deservedly so - it's unbelievably incredible pizza and definitely one-of-a-kind. I even make my reservations for a big table as soon as I have my flight info... Can't wait for my next trip back to Philly! Congratulations to the Tacconelli family for this Zagat listing of recognition to their brilliance.
ReplyDeleteWho ever said Slices must've gone to the Jug first.
ReplyDeleteYOU SIT ON A THRONE OF LIES. How dare you claim to be enough of an insider to know about the Jug, only to turn your back on slices? You ought to be ashamed of yourself!
DeleteAnyone who is from NYC and who isn't a complete moron knows that slices is complete garbage. Slices is adequate drunk food, and that is all. It's a disgrace that it's even on this list. You might as well put Dominos up there, too.
DeleteObviously someone from the fabulous new york city would know what's best.
DeleteSlices was terrible, people just thought they looked it because it was so hyped and the first time they ate it they were drunk
DeleteAh, the people of New York City: thinking they're better than you since 1624. Ignore.
DeleteSlices is great pizza late night or anytime. I love how they even have the technique down to drop the slice on the wax paper making it slide across the counter to you.
The disgrace is comparing it to Dominos. Yeah, I remember MY first beer...
In a town with three pizza choices (including Pizza Hut), "Slices" didn't make the top five. The fact that this place is on the list makes me doubt the entire Zagat brand.
DeleteSlices is amazing and well-worth the trip... as long as you stop in at the Glass and the Bacon while you're there!
DeleteAnyone who puts down slices is a plug.
DeleteI would like to note that I have eaten pizza in Italy, pizza by Mario Batalli, Michael White and other great chefs. I have also eaten drunk and sober slices. While slices may not be as sophisticated, it doesn't mean it's not fucking good. To all you slices haters...turn a stool over and take a seat... Happy Holidays!
DeleteSlices is puke...going in and coming out. Colgate nepotism FTW!
DeleteHad some in 2010 for 25th reunion...still as good as 1981-1985, especially after closing down Jug & Hour Glass
DeleteCrozet Pizza in Crozet, VA definitely deserves an honorable mention!!
ReplyDeleteI can vouch for Slices as a Colgate University alumnus; best years of my life, best pizza of my life. I've tried it stone sober and not at all sober (as many of my days and nights at 'Gate were spent)--amazing either way!
ReplyDeleteHere here!!! After many years the burns on the roof of my my mouth from being impatient have finally healed!
DeleteTwo words....secret pizza!
ReplyDeleteYep, it's all about secret pizza
DeleteOh No! You totally left out New Haven CT! Sally's, Pepe's and Modern Pizza are to die for!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely! Nothing beats a white pie with fresh clams and garlic at Pepe's Apizza.
DeletePepe's in New Haven, CT is the absolute best!
DeleteEven better after six hours at Hickey's!!
ReplyDeleteGo 'Gate!
"All the way to the end of the Port Washington line?" "Train rides over an hour long" to get to Bay Shore? Oh Zagat, you of all establishments should know that the world exists outside of NYC. Some people actually - gasp! - LIVE in (or near) those towns.
ReplyDeleteObviously a 'gate alum working on this list, and I ain't even mad. Go 'Gate!
ReplyDeleteGO 'GATE!!!
DeleteNo Chicago pizza? This list has no credibility without a Chicago pizzeria. Zagat email deleted.
ReplyDeleteNot 1 Chicago Pizza Joint made this list... Are you kidding me?! Zero credibility for sure...
ReplyDeletePen1s
ReplyDeleteSlow clap...
DeleteWhoever wrote this wasn't a true slices disciple because there was no mention of hot sauce or ranch in that description
ReplyDeleteI would kill for a slice and an orange crush right about now... Go 'GATE!!
ReplyDeleteNo one mentions "Mozza" in LA???
ReplyDeleteCome on! Best pizza ever
You forgot Little Star pizza in SF -- 2 locations. Their deep-dish cornmeal crust pizza is really, really good.
ReplyDeleteChicago should definitely have representation! Lou's is my personal favorite. Agreed on Flour + Water. Have you ever been to Hog & Hominy in Memphis, Tennessee? Awesome spot. And fun, out of the way city = legit destination pizza.
ReplyDeleteWhat, no side of ranch ? Go 'Gate!
ReplyDeletePeabody's and Slices, best nights ever!! Go 'GATE!
ReplyDeleteWhy is it you all miss most of the USA in deciding what is best where? There has to be some problem with you all! New York hasn't had the best pizzas in 20 years. Maybe you all need to explore the rest of the country. The upper Midwest would be a good place to start.
ReplyDeleteLove the list in Toronto we love Franks Pizza House more of a New York stone pizza
ReplyDeleteNo Chicago representation, no credibility...
ReplyDeleteYou read the part where it said pizza right? Maybe a Lasagna list will come out for those pies they make in Chicago
DeleteEver heard of Petalluma, Patsy's, Louis and Ernie's, or Zero Otto Nove? Furthermore, have you ever eaten pizza in the New York City area? This review is almost as bad as the time Donald Trump took Sarah Palin to Famiglia's.
ReplyDeleteYES zero otto nove! i work in the bronx, and it is the best. other notables include fat cat pie and the new bar sugo in norwalk, ct - both incredible.
Deletelastly, GO 'GATE - slices topped with tons of parm.
Excited to see Slices, but shocked that the only NYC spot was Roberta's (j&b Spomoni Gardens is my personal fave) and there was no mention of any of the New Haven shops? Sacrilege.
ReplyDeleteLotsa good Pizza places - and my choice for the perfect Margherita (as good as the one I had in Florence years ago) - is Motorino - close to the East Village. Great crust, San Marzano tomatoes, fresh Buffalo Mozzerela and fresh basil leaves - cooked in the traditional Italian brick oven - built especially for them.
ReplyDeletesee: http://motorinopizza.com/
And here in San Diego - Bronx Pizza in Mission Hills is pretty good.
Slices were good after the Jug, Hickey's, wherever. Miss them.
ReplyDeleteThe best part about NY Pizzaria was after quart night (Monday - $1.75/mason jar, $1.25 refills), Import night (Wednesday), Friday, Saturday... or any other night at Hickeys... you didn't have to chew. It was more of an inhale. Hail to Everett!
ReplyDeleteSince it's the middle of winter, and so many people are visiting South Florida, it might have been nice to include Tucci's in Boca Raton, Florida. Having grown up in New York, worked in New Haven, and lived for a long time in L.A., I can tell you the Pizza at Tucci's is as good as any you'll find. Try it! Everyone I take there agrees.
ReplyDeleteSLICES!!!!! WITH A SIDE OF RANCH!
ReplyDeleteMight need a "user survey", obviously lots of faves out there. Come to St. Louis some time and try Katie's Pizzeria, Pi, and The Good Pie - all of them worth the trip!
ReplyDeleteHow Sally's, and even Pepe's, in New Haven didn't make the list is INSANE.
ReplyDeleteOK, I have no dog in this hunt, since I have never even heard of any of these places.
ReplyDeleteBut Heck, KUDOS to the staff of and the reviewers of ZAGAT for getting off their butts and going outside the usual 8 or 9 places they always go to for reviewing places to eat.
Whoever plans on going to Slices should know that it's daily operating hours are 4PM til 2 AM.
ReplyDeleteL&B Spumoni Gardens in Brooklyn, Nick's of Forest Hills, John's on Bleeker Street, Umberto's in New Hyde Park...So many great pizzss, so little time.
ReplyDeleteZagat's - you are losing my interest exceedingly quickly. In case you don't know, the entire middle of the country is populated (including Texas!), and believe it or not, we actually eat at restaurants, that have real chefs and everything! Oh, and people from both coasts actually come here too on occasion. Get some real food writers with some breadth of knowledge on your staff asap - please.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure Zagat's is devastated that they're losing your interest. The great majority of the population lives on the coasts, and none of them care about middle America. Get used to it.
DeleteGlad to see someone mention Franks Pizza House Best Pizza In Toronto its our favorite also. Visit Franks Pizza House whenever we travel to Toronto.
ReplyDeleteThe best pizza in California is at Oenotri in Napa. Amazing Neapolitan pizza. Simply the best!
ReplyDeleteSo great for Slices to be recognized--small town and the best pizza i've had! GO 'GATE!
ReplyDeleteI like to wash down Slices with a beer poured down one of my fraternity brothers' asses.
ReplyDeleteGREAT LAKES, Chicago, Andersonville
ReplyDeleteDrinking at Peabody's and date raping girls works up a big appetite... and appetite only satisfied by Slices.
ReplyDeleteGo 'Gate
Slices bathroom had a great gloryhole.
ReplyDeleteYummy Slices
ReplyDeleteDenino's in Staten Island of course! But there's one in Brick, NJ too! Support victims of Sandy by going there. Hands down is the BEST!
ReplyDeleteA-16 and Delfina Pizzeria (probably among others) are superior to Flour + Water in San Francisco.
ReplyDeleteBorn and raised in Hamilton NY I know that the NY Pizzeria was (and always will be) a local hot spot. I am proud that my small hometown has made the list. Congrats to the owners of slices for making amazing pizza and putting Hamilton on the map. You guys rock.... Oh... And, Go Gate!!!
ReplyDeleteCheers to the inclusion of Pizza Barbone; it truly stands out for creativity, atmosphere, quality and service! Totally worth a trip to Cape Cod! Do not miss the seasonally appropriate specials as well as the housemade Oreos. Oh and make sure you have a pint of Cape Cod Beer while you're there!
ReplyDeleteYou REALLY missed the boat in LoHud however - how did you overlook Polpettina in Eastchester (Westchester Magazine's Best New Restaurant of 2012)? The pizza is outstanding and sourced with fresh, local ingredients, and you cannot find a better selection of craft beers - including local favorites - to wash it down with. Their regular menu features even more locally sourced and inventive dishes and you can enjoy a cup of Blue Bottle pour-over coffee, which is probably one of the best I've had. All of this in a super friendly and cozy atmosphere with excellent service. Plus - they are just good people, who do good things for their community. I hope your readers will make the trip - easy train ride from NYC on metro north! WORTH THE TRIP!
Pizza Pub! Pizza Pub!
ReplyDeleteI have been judging pizza everywhere I go in the States and Slices is no question in my top three. Hands down
ReplyDeleteHmmmm. And don't forget Colony Grill in Stamford, CT on your pizza tour!
ReplyDeleteCrazy how DiFara from Brooklyn is not even here, but you got "Slices" in the list? Holy $#¡t!!!
ReplyDeleteYou need to include Pizzeria da Marco, Bethesda, Md.
ReplyDelete
