While everyone has their favorite local slice joint, there are also superlative out-of-town pies that might actually be worth a road trip. DeleteI work in the restaurant business and Lucca in the Back Bay has the best food around. I highly recommend it. It is between the colonnade and Marriott Back Bay hotels on Huntington avenue.
DeleteThe phrase "Really? REALLY?" springs to mind. I guess I can only be glad that California wasn't on your list. And, despite that I am a NY pizza person through & through, I have to wonder how no representation of Chicago (bleh) deep-dish was listed when you included that weird aberration that is Detroit-style pizza.

Buddy's pizza is the best. A on this article! Bravo great work to the author. I bet you think you're funny and smart for using the word "aberration." But you're not. And you're not popular, or pretty. Only smart and pretty people eat at Buddys. Chicago deep dish is great, if you're planning on gaining on putting on 7 pounds at dinner.

DeleteYou missed one or more of the world-class pizzerias in Old Forge, PA, e.g., Arcaro and Genell's. The white pizza is worth a journey.

ReplyDeleteSo thrilled to see my favorite all-time pizza destination, Tacconelli's, in this list. The white pie with spinach and plum tomatoes never disappoints. It's garlicky and delicious. Simple ingredients, perfectly delivered to your table. The white pie with whatever else you prefer is definitely the way to go, regardless. And don't forget to order the delicious hot peppers marinating in oil on the side. Been going there for over 30 years, and it's the first place I like to eat when I fly all the way back there from LA. It's usually a family and friends event, and we get a big table, place our order for around 15 doughs; (we're big eaters,) and don't worry about the leftovers - I eat whatever slices wind up being taken home through the rest of my visit, and my cousins plan on one going home to their freezers. It's also a good idea to have them half-bake your pie if you plan on taking it out and finishing it off per their instructional handout when you get home, if you can't get all of your group down to Port Richmond from out in the burbs, or wherever. The Tacconelli family is extremely friendly and accommodating, and it's a must to put in your order early in the day to make sure the haven't sold out by the time you go, as they're a small business that prefers not to throw out leftover dough, and I've gotten there in the past to find a "sold out" sign on the door, as they're extremely popular. Deservedly so - it's unbelievably incredible pizza and definitely one-of-a-kind. I even make my reservations for a big table as soon as I have my flight info... Can't wait for my next trip back to Philly! Congratulations to the Tacconelli family for this Zagat listing of recognition to their brilliance.

DeleteAnyone who is from NYC and who isn't a complete moron knows that slices is complete garbage. Slices is adequate drunk food, and that is all. It's a disgrace that it's even on this list. You might as well put Dominos up there, too.

In a town with three pizza choices (including Pizza Hut), "Slices" didn't make the top five. The fact that this place is on the list makes me doubt the entire Zagat brand.

DeleteI would like to note that I have eaten pizza in Italy, pizza by Mario Batalli, Michael White and other great chefs. I have also eaten drunk and sober slices. While slices may not be as sophisticated, it doesn't mean it's not fucking good. To all you slices haters...turn a stool over and take a seat... Happy Holidays!

ReplyDeleteI can vouch for Slices as a Colgate University alumnus; best years of my life, best pizza of my life. I've tried it stone sober and not at all sober (as many of my days and nights at 'Gate were spent)--amazing either way!

You forgot Little Star pizza in SF -- 2 locations. Their deep-dish cornmeal crust pizza is really, really good.

ReplyDeleteWhy is it you all miss most of the USA in deciding what is best where? There has to be some problem with you all! New York hasn't had the best pizzas in 20 years. Maybe you all need to explore the rest of the country. The upper Midwest would be a good place to start.

Excited to see Slices, but shocked that the only NYC spot was Roberta's (j&b Spomoni Gardens is my personal fave) and there was no mention of any of the New Haven shops? Sacrilege.
ReplyDeleteLotsa good Pizza places - and my choice for the perfect Margherita (as good as the one I had in Florence years ago) - is Motorino - close to the East Village. Great crust, San Marzano tomatoes, fresh Buffalo Mozzerela and fresh basil leaves - cooked in the traditional Italian brick oven - built especially for them.

Slices were good after the Jug, Hickey's, wherever. Miss them.
ReplyDeleteThe best part about NY Pizzaria was after quart night (Monday - $1.75/mason jar, $1.25 refills), Import night (Wednesday), Friday, Saturday... or any other night at Hickeys... you didn't have to chew. It was more of an inhale. Hail to Everett!
ReplyDeleteSince it's the middle of winter, and so many people are visiting South Florida, it might have been nice to include Tucci's in Boca Raton, Florida. Having grown up in New York, worked in New Haven, and lived for a long time in L.A., I can tell you the Pizza at Tucci's is as good as any you'll find. Try it! Everyone I take there agrees.

Whoever plans on going to Slices should know that it's daily operating hours are 4PM til 2 AM.

In case you don't know, the entire middle of the country is populated (including Texas!), and believe it or not, we actually eat at restaurants, that have real chefs and everything! Oh, and people from both coasts actually come here too on occasion. Get some real food writers with some breadth of knowledge on your staff asap - please.

ReplyDeleteBorn and raised in Hamilton NY I know that the NY Pizzeria was (and always will be) a local hot spot. I am proud that my small hometown has made the list. Congrats to the owners of slices for making amazing pizza and putting Hamilton on the map. You guys rock.... Oh... And, Go Gate!!!
ReplyDeleteCheers to the inclusion of Pizza Barbone; it truly stands out for creativity, atmosphere, quality and service! Totally worth a trip to Cape Cod! Do not miss the seasonally appropriate specials as well as the housemade Oreos. Oh and make sure you have a pint of Cape Cod Beer while you're there!
ReplyDeleteYou REALLY missed the boat in LoHud however - how did you overlook Polpettina in Eastchester (Westchester Magazine's Best New Restaurant of 2012)? The pizza is outstanding and sourced with fresh, local ingredients, and you cannot find a better selection of craft beers - including local favorites - to wash it down with. Their regular menu features even more locally sourced and inventive dishes and you can enjoy a cup of Blue Bottle pour-over coffee, which is probably one of the best I've had. All of this in a super friendly and cozy atmosphere with excellent service. Plus - they are just good people, who do good things for their community. I hope your readers will make the trip - easy train ride from NYC on metro north! WORTH THE TRIP!
