Best Thing We Ate This Weekend: Carnitas Hash at KTCHN DTLA

For months we've heard that the semi-permanent pop-up KTCHN DTLA brunch at The Gorbals is one of the best weekend brunches in town. But there was something about sitting in that dark restaurant on gorgeous sunny weekend days that kept us away. We regret that decision if only because we would've had the carnitas hash with perfectly golden sunny-side up egg and jalapeƱo hollandaise that much sooner. Or the crispy cornmeal catfish on soft ciabatta with chipotle slaw and spicy pickles. Or the fresh chayote, jicama and mixed greens salad with guava goat cheese spoon bread. Or the fresh pressed juice sans booze, though the Bloody Mary smelled particularly spicy and delicious from a table over.

We love the vision of chef Felix Barron, who started doing cooking classes and food events, including a clandestine brunch, out of his Downtown loft. The flavors are bold on his menus, the combinations unique, and his focus on fresh, seasonal ingredients is on point. The KTCHN brunch at Ilan Hall's hidden restaurant in the Alexandria Hotel takes place on Saturdays, and starting December 2, it moves to The Wood Spoon on Sundays. You'll hear that reservations are mandatory (make them here), but we walked in and scored a spot. Give it a shot - you won't regret it.
