Best Thing We Ate This Week in DC: Matchbox's Mini Burgers

Bigger isn’t always better when it comes to burgers. Matchbox’s lovable mini-burgers help prove our point, which is why we were appreciative that Burger Week gave us an excuse to test this theory once again at this wildly popular New American. Spoiler alert - the crispy, fried onion strings that accompany the burgers just might be as strong of an attraction.

We headed to the original location in Chinatown and took a seat at its long, narrow, wooden bar. Obeying our conscience, we ordered a salad as well, but we must confess that it remained untouched (and was taken home) once the main draw arrived. The deliciously juicy beef patties are encased in a just soft enough brioche bun. There’s a pickle for sweet-and-sour contrast, and we added Gorgonzola cheese, one of the optional toppings. One bite easily leads to another, and another mini-burger is gone before you know it.

The burgers arrive in a nest of slender, crunchy onion strings. Their taste and texture complement the burgers perfectly. Making for an irresistible pairing.
