Best Thing We Ate: Claypot Chicken at Out the Door Bush Street

Although it became official last week that Charles Phan (Slanted Door) has given up on the long-shuttered Westfield outpost of Out The Door (now replaced by a temporary retail shop named Flying Elephants), fans of Phan’s claypot chicken, shaking beef and spring rolls need only hop on the MUNI and head over to the more mature, sit-down OTD sibling Out The Door Bush Street near Upper Fillmore to enjoy the same signature Vietnamese cooking, alt food-friendly wines (including 12 on tap) and hip Olle Lundberg design. We did just that last week, where we tucked into plates of Dungeness crab with cellophane noodles, grilled sweet potatoes coated with cilantro and lime and that addictive claypot chicken cloaked in a sweet-tangy-spicy caramel sauce (shown above). You’ll also find lesser-known surprises such as the gluten-free hue dumplings (a tapioca wrapper filled with ground mung beans drizzled with scallion oil and spicy soy sauce) and vegetarian rice noodles tossed with Hodo Soy yuba strips and chanterelles.

And unlike the Westfield branch and its take-away kiosk at the Ferry Building, OTD on Bush St is a well-kept secret for breakfast and weekend brunch, offering both Asian staples such as steam buns and beef  pho along with American offerings such as French toast with cardamom-mascarpone cream and soft scrambled organic eggs with Zoe’s bacon. Plus, it takes reservations. Westfield OTD? We hardly knew ya.
