You've already ordered your heritage turkey and you know just the bakery to pick up pumpkin pie, but now it looks like you don't even need to leave your house to get the Thanksgiving Day wines. Just in time for the holidays, Amazon.com has just launched an
online wine marketplace. The new
Amazon Wine service, currently in beta, features thousands of labels of wine, mostly from California, Washington State and other western regions, searchable by price, varietal, winery, tasting notes, rating and a few other relevant criteria. Customers can order up to six bottles for a flat shipping fee of $9.99. For the time being, the new wine service is only available to customers in
California, Connecticut, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, Nevada, North Carolina, Oregon, Washington, Wyoming and D.C.
The business of wine sales, both on and offline, have long been stymied by complex and arcane shipping regulations that govern the sale and delivery of alcohol across state lines. With Amazon and competitor Wine.com (which announced a similar initiative earlier in the week) getting into the business, is a bottle of Coppola on every doorstep that much closer to a reality?
