There’s a reason the gastropub trend caught on big and hasn’t really stopped - the combination of good food and great beer in a relaxed setting is hard to beat. Though some restaurants shy away from the moniker (see, for example, the website for West Philly’s Local 44: “No, we're not a gastropub. We kind of hate that word.”), others embrace it, such as newly opened Rhino Bar. Whatever you call them, Philadelphia’s got an above-average crop of these drink-happy eateries. Check out the top 10 gastropubs in Philly, according to your votes in our Survey, in the slide show below.

These places all sound great but I'll stick to my favorite Gastropub (whether they want that moniker or not, I don't know) -- Prohibition! Official name of course is The Prohibition Taproom @ 501 North 13th Street, Phila, PA 19123. If you haven't been -- GO! Amazing food, awesome beer menu, mystery kegs tapped every Wednesday and BYOV -- for Vinyl -- on Sunday nights. What's not to love!
ReplyDeleteBarbuzzo is no where near what I would call a gastropub. Yes, it's an amazing restaurant. No, it does not belong on this list.

DeleteSeconded. It's a restaurant. An awesome, awesome restaurant
DeletePlus, it's nowhere near Washington Square West unless you have Godzilla's leg span!
DeleteAgreed!
DeleteAll these places are great - but there is no way on earth I would consider Barbuzzo a gastropub, by any means. It's amazing, but I just don't see how you could classify it as such. Also, a little surprised Monks didn't make the list...
ReplyDeleteI kept clicking through, expecting to see Monk's. I mean, didn't Fergus pretty much launch the whole concept in Philly about a decade and a half ago??
Delete"This" article "does not have" enough "quotation marks."
ReplyDeleteMuch as I would like to keep the Abbaye a secret, it certainly deserves this recognition. And if you dread the hipsters, rest assured it is "less hipster, more doofus." Kudos to the Memphis Taproom as well...
ReplyDeleteYeah, as soon as i saw P&K listed, I knew this was a joke.
ReplyDeleteUh...Alla Spina, Monk's, Resurrection, etc. Nice list of restaurants, but clearly out of touch with the local scene.
ReplyDeleteWho rates these places with numbers for food, service and decor...but there is no scale? How are you suppose to know what a 27 is work when there idea what that means by nothing to compare it with? Hello? I mean people voted...so how does one compare the numbers against the votes? Something is missing and it's not a few brain cells....it's a brain!
ReplyDeleteSo what about the Good Dog bar and Dandelion? They are both in Rittenhouse and have amazing food. Dandelion fits Pub more than most as it is built as an Irish Pub and has excellent English/Irish food. the Good Dog bar has the most amazing cuisine!
