Will The Phene Arms be Next to Join 'The Lost Pubs of London?'

The Phene Arms in Chelsea - a local pub visited by everyone from Hugh Grant to George Best - is facing possible closure. Owner and property developer Robert Bourne wants to turn the popular watering hole built in 1850 by Victorian philanthropist Samuel Phene into a £20 million home. (He is hoping to do the same with the nearby 300-year old Cross Keys Pub, which closed earlier this month).

Locals are furious and according to the Evening Standard more than 1,000 people have signed a petition against his plans arguing that the pub is a big part of the local community. But ultimately the fate of the pub or luxury home lies in the hands of the Kensington and Chelsea council who are hearing the case today.
