The Bay Area dining scene is already bucking the trend in which too few women chefs are assuming prominent roles in the kitchen as evidenced by the string of recent kitchen appointments. Food writer Charlotte Druckman examines this trend and reports from the front lines, chronicling the trials and tribulations of 100 female chefs who are hanging with the boys in her new book, "Skirt Steak: Women Chefs on Standing the Heat and Staying in the Kitchen." Druckman is in San Francisco this week for her press tour and will be teaming up with a team of top female culinary talents to promote her new book.

On October 4, she'll be at a special three-course collaborative dinner at Jardiniere prepared by Traci des Jardins, pastry chef Ellie Mueller and guest chef Liza Shaw (6 PM, $125 per person includes 3-course dinner with wine pairings, signed copy of "Skirt Steak", tax and gratuity. Reservations can be made on Jardiniere's website).

If you want to catch Druckman without spending a dime, on October 5 she will be hosting a book reading at Omnivore Books and will be joined by local celebs Elizabeth Pruiett of Tartine Bakery and Emily Luchetti of Waterbar (6-7 PM, free, 3885 Cesar Chavez St.; 415-282-4712).
