Suzanne Tracht welcomes fall with a menu of new dishes every Monday at Jar, each showcasing a single ingredient. Tonight it's all about duck - duck sausage, roasted duck breas with pears and masala, and sticky toffee pudding (no duck). Three courses for $55 each week (8225 Beverly Blvd.; 323-655-6566).
Hard to believe Scott Conant's Scarpetta restaurant celebrates two years in Beverly Hills today. To honor the milestone, slip in and dine on the special three-course anniversary menu this week. Taste signature dishes like creamy polenta with truffled mushrooms, veal cheek brasato with rutabaga puree, and panna cotta and budino for dessert. Cost is $55 and includes a flight of wine. We can't help but feel like Ron Burgundy anytime we sip Scotch, or at least say the famous line from Anchorman. It will come in handy at Everson Royce's Scotch tasting held at the Armory Center for the Arts in Pasadena today (6-8 PM). For $45, sample eight different single malts including Arran 10 and 14 year, Clenglassaugh and Chieftain's Linkwood Cask Strength 19 year. Talmadge Lowe from Pharmacie LA will supply mixers for scotch cocktails. Tickets are $45, and reservations are recommended but not necessary. The Morso della Bestia, or "bite of the beast" whole animal dinners continue this week at Locanda del Lago. Tonight you'll find an array of lamb dishes using various cuts and cooking techniques, including lamb liver pate with juniper berry essence, lamb tenderloin carpaccio, lamb neck with leeks and black wild rice, and leg of lamb carved tableside. Get unlimited carafes of house red or white wine for $18. Dinner starts at 7 PM and costs $42 per person (231 Arizona Ave.; 310-451-3525).
Test Kitchen keeps rolling at Bestia downtown. Tonight some of the South Bay's shining chefs come a bit north to show us what they can do. The menu will feature the stylings of Greg Hozinsky from The Strand House, Darren Weiss from Darren's Restaurant, and Brooke Williamson - a Top Chef Seattle contestant - and her husband/chef partner Nick Roberts from The Tripel and Hudson House. The menu is still tbd, but you know it will be seasonal, a little gastropubby, and there will always be $10 cocktails to go along with it. Reserve a spot online (2121 East 7th Pl.).
While everyone has pumpkin and Haloween colors on the brain, remember this is the last stretch for National Breast Cancer Awareness Month at places like Magnolia Bakery, where you can get pink ribbon cupcakes. One way to close out the weekend is to find a cheap dinner. Tortilla Republic, West Hollywood's newish modern Mexican restaurant in West Hollywood, now has teh “Taste of TR” so you can taste a few of the more popular dihses like carnitas taquitos, swordfish and shrimp ceviche, and chicken tinga enchiladas in creamy tomatillo sauce, and poblao rellenos stuffed with eggplant and goat cheese.
