|Pan de los muertos and altars at Hollywood Forever this weekend|
For 37 years the Inn of the Seventh Ray has been known as a destination spot, nestled not too far way in Topanga Canyon. Locals love it for its picturesque outdoor setting, and for many years, as a specifically vegetarian-friendly spot. Now there's a new chef at the helm, Bradley Miller, a Patina alum, updating and refining the menu, which still focuses on organic, sustainable, local and seasonal ingredients. Brunch out here is a treat - you'll feel world's away - and there's even bacon (well, duck bacon). Now is the time to recheck it out.
Serving as an anchor for the Orlando Hotel, The Churchill has lit up West Third Street for the last year. Tonight (Thursday, Oct. 25), celebrate the anni with $6 specialty cocktails after 10 PM, things like the Grand Alliance (Plymouth gin, Carpano, Campari, maraschino), the Iron Mule (vodka, ginger, lime, soda, bitters), and Norman's Cable Car (rum, house-made curacao, cinnamon and a sugar rim). At 11 PM, KCRW DJ extraordinaire Jason Bentley spins.
Halloween isn't the only holiday this time of year - next week its Dia de los Muertos (Nov. 1), and this Saturday the largest Day of the Dead celebration in Los Angeles takes place at Hollywood Forever Cemetary. Don't miss the colorful costumed parade, live music (Ozomatli!), Aztec dancers, and elaborate altars created by local artists. Spend the day, eat and graze around the food vendors and trucks, and honor our beloved spirits and souls. And, hey, it's the last one before the Maya calendar says the world will end. Might as well soak it up now. Tickets are $10.
