Crepe News: Cafe L’Aube on Washington, So Crêpe on South

The best crepes we’ve ever eaten in Philadelphia are made by Jean-Luc Fanny at Cafe L’Aube - though it’s less like eating and more like the supremely thin pancakes just sublimate on your tongue. When he closed his original location on South Street West, choosing to concentrate only on his new spot in Fairmount, it was a blow to breakfast fans in the area. Rejoice, because L’Aube is returning. Foobooz has news of a new cafe - more than just a coffee shop - set to open at 2025 Washington Avenue, in a retail storefront beside NextFab Studio, owned by Evan Malone (who, with wife Jill Weber, owns both Jet Wine Bar and Rex 1516). A timetable puts December 1 as the tentative opening date.

As an added bonus, Foobooz also brings word of a new creperie set to descend upon South Street West, just a few doors down from the original Cafe L’Aube (the area is fast becoming a hotspot, quite a difference from just a couple years ago). Owner Fabrice Goutte hails from Lyon, France, and is promoting the philosophy that affordable food served fast does not have to be “fast food.” So Crêpe made its debut during Bloktoberfest a few weeks back, but the retail shop will not be ready for at least a year.
