Best Thing We Ate Today: Sqirl's Egg Brioche Toast

Sqirl jam goddess Jessica Koslow opened her Silver Lake production space for breakfast and lunch yesterday, meaning you can now taste those fabulous chutneys, preserves, fruit butters, pickles, salsas and marmalades on Proof Bakery brioche, brown rice bowls, or simply with cheese. The space is teensy, with a little kitchen and counter, and a small patio and bench seating along the side. Just enough room to enjoy something like this piece of toast with vinegary greens, fresh tomatillo salsa, homemade jalapeno hot sauce and a perfectly fried egg. Spicy, pickled, buttery - it's wonderful. And anything you taste that's jarred up, you can buy for home (we'd love that hot sauce).

Also on the menu: homemade almond milk or yogurt with granola, Kukuho Rose brown rice porridge, scrambles with fine herbs, and gluten-free hazelnut cake with jam among others. All go perfectly with G&B Coffee - a new outfit from former Intelligentsia guys, Kyle Glanville and Charles Babinski. Check out the bottled cold brew; it is so good. The shop is open Thursday through Tuesday, 7 AM to 3 PM (720 N. Virgil Ave.; 213-394-6526).
