Best Thing We Ate Last Night: Beef Cheeks at The Bowery

It's customary to hit one of the fine establishments in Hollywood before a show at the Bowl, Ford Amphitheater, Palladium, Arclight or any other theatre/performance space in the 'hood. For us, it's often a stop at The Bowery for a glass of wine, a juicy burger on an English muffin and a side of (some of the best in town) sweet potato fries. And that's exactly what we expected to eat last night, until we noticed a new menu at the bar, one with crispy fried kale with chile flakes, charred broccolini with raisins and pine nuts, carrots and red quinoa salad, and pan-roasted Pacific snapper with bok choy. What? We would never order beef cheeks here - this is our burger spot! - but we did, and they were delicious, perfectly tender, flavorful, and great with the smashed butternut squash. We kind of like this new direction for one of our favorite barestaurants. But don't worry,  if poached chicken and frisee isn't your thing, you can still get a great burger or a messy plate of short-rib cheese fries.
